Wednesday

Students finished up their Book of Saints. They will be bringing them home tomorrow.
In art students made cards for Veterans Day. Students made brain hats. Below are pictures of 2B Brainy Students.
We also learned about spiders and their webs.
In math students practiced adding 3 3-digit number sentences.

Friday will be a buck-a-jeans day and the donations will be given to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
2B will be going to Benediction on Friday from 10:40-11:00.

Tomorrow please look for field trip information and a permission slip for the 2nd grade field trip to the Diocese of Phoenix.

Monday

You will find a Book Talk packet in your child's folder.This is an individualized book report. Students need to pick our a book. Then fill in the bottom of the top page and bring it back for my approval. Then students may pick one project to do their book talk on. They will be presenting their project and will need to give a brief summary, including the main characters, setting, problem, solution, along with any details they would like to include. Remember students do only one project, NOT one from each section.

In religion we reviewed the Ten Commandments and discussed the Great Commandment that Jesus gave us.
We are finishing up our saints book this week.
In language students worked on endings, dropping the silent e before adding s, ed or ing. They also practiced the contraction n't. Students listened to a story called, "Vote for Me!". Tomorrow students will work in small groups and they will write a TV commercial asking viewers to vote for either the donkey or the elephant. This story has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. On election day students will vote for either the donkey or the elephant.
In math students did a great job adding 3 3-digit numbers with renaming.
In social studies students learned about some American heroes like Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe, and Cesar Chavez.
In science students learned about the digestive system and they took a short quiz on the systems of the human body.

Today students read about how a harbor seal was rescued and then released. We are working on story sequencing. Students wrote a rough draft today about How to Care for a Pet. They will write a final copy tomorrow. We are also working on antonyms and plural nouns.

Those whose powerpoints are finished can be found on the website under student projects on the home page, under the picture of Jesus. We also put together a class book with the tissue paper pictures the students created about their seed.

In math we began renaming twice from the tens to hundreds.

Wednesday

Today in language students took the CLOSE test for frequently misspelled words. We also worked on homophones and we will continue this into next week. We reviewed vocabulary for our new story called, "A Harbor Seal Grows Up". We are also reviewing consonant blends.
Students will be writing "How to Care for a Pet". They will use numbers and sequencing words.
In math students practiced renaming in their workbooks.
In science students made a bone model and we reviewed the circulatory system, the respiratory system and the skeletal system.

Tuesday

Today in religion we wrote a children's version of the Ten Commandments. This made the Commandments more concrete.
In language arts students had their weekly spelling/dictation tests and the reading weekly assessment. They also worked with nouns and homophones.
In math students renaming to the hundreds.
In science we are working on the skeletal system.
In social studies we talked about the symbols for the United States and for Arizona.

Monday

Today in religion we began a unit on the Ten Commandments. We will be working on them over the coming week. They already know most of them by heart.
In language we are finishing up our class book about a seed using tissue paper to illustrate the pages. We will be putting the book in order so the pages will tell a story. We are also working on "How to..." stories using first, next, and last sequencing words.
We are also working on homophones.
In math we are continuing with renaming with addition.
In social studies we are working on the unit on government and elections. We will be taking a little more time since the elections are coming soon.
In science we are beginning a new unit on the skeletal system, just in time for Halloween.
Don't forget the Harvest Festival is this Friday night.

Thursday

In religion today we read about Abraham and Isaac, and David and Goliath. We read about how they were servants of God and did what He wanted. We also read that they trusted that god would take care of them.
In language students started creating the page using tissue paper for the illustrations for our class book about a seed. It doesn't have a title yet. We also reviewed long and short U and reviewed the story vocabulary.
Students went to music and PE today. In math students worked with partners doing some peer tutoring as they helped one another with addition with renaming.

Wednesday

Today was a good day during Mass. We have a visiting priest from Notre Dame. Students received a prayer card with the Nicene Creed. Father Pete would like children to begin saying this prayer everyday at home. We will of course include it in our daily prayers.
In reading we started a new story, "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle. We are also writing a class story about where each of our seeds will end up. The students will use tissue to illustrate their page for the book. I hopefully will be able to put it into a powerpoint and share it on the class website.
We also reviewed vocabulary and how to use context clues in a story.
In math students began writing the algorithm for addition number sentences with renaming. This is a fancy way of saying we started adding with carrying. Manipulatives are still very useful for students to see how and why they need to trade or rename.
In social studies we began a unit on government. This includes the election, monuments, government leaders, and where they work.
In science we finished up our work on the circulatory by talking a little bit about what is in our blood, like platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma.

Tuesday

Today students were exceptional during Adoration. Yesterday we talked about Noah and how he was a servant of God and did what God wanted.
In language students had their spelling test and the CLOSE test for the week. They also worked on their powerpoints. They are becoming very proficient in it. Most of them are done.
In science we continued work on the circulatory system. Today students took a resting heart rate and a active heart rate. They were surprised that the active rate was so much higher. They also learned that blood goes to the heart to get oxygen and then sends it throughout the body.
In math students worked on renaming in addition and they used mental math for some problem solving.
We also did a pattern math sprint.
This Friday at 12:30 is PRIDE Day.The topic this week will be Respect God, Respect one another. This will also be the CARE Bully Prevention kick-off. It is a buck-a-jeans day.

Thursday

Today students went to Mass and Fr. Pete talked to the students about the beginning of the Year of Faith and what that means. After Mass the whole school went outside and stood where the new church is going to be. Mrs. Scott took a school picture of all us standing there with hands raised saying, "The Time Is Now".
Thank goodness it wasn't too hot or rainy.
In language arts students worked completed a short o, long o word sort. They also were given a short individual fluency check.
In math students reviewed addition and subtraction with no renaming. We will quiz on those concepts tomorrow. We also completed a math sprint and talked about different ways to add multiple numbers in your head by grouping and using number bonds, along with using a number line.
In science we talked more about the respiratory system and the parts of the respiratory system.

Tomorrow at 1:00 is the School-wide Rosary.

Wednesday

Today was backwards day. We had music and PE today, along with Vision and Hearing Screening. We were blessed to have Mrs. Hepsen come in and talk to us about our CARE bully prevention program. Students watched a very cute "We Are Family-A Musical Message for All". This was about including everyone and that we are all part of the world family. She also told our students that the bully prevention theme this year is "inclusion" and how we can include others in our games and playing times.

In language we worked on silent letters and homophones. Students finished final drafts of their All About Me writing. In social studies students were read a book about Columbus and they completed some Columbus Day activities.
In math students played the renaming game using subtraction. They practiced trading tens for ones and then subtracting. They did a great job.

Tomorrow is Mass and we also have art.

Tuesday

Today we read about Blessed Mary and we talked about Our Lady of the Rosary. We now have a Traveling Rosary for our class. Each student will have the opportunity to pray the Rosary with his/her family. When they are done the student returns the Traveling Rosary for the next student on the list.
Please feel free to pray the Rosary to fit your family.

Students did have a spelling test today. The new spelling words are review words and I have included frequently misspelled spelling words from the last 5 tests. Students also took the reading Weekly Assessment.
In math students are subtracting without renaming.

The Activities for this week include: Mass on Thursday instead of Wednesday, same time.
Hearing/Vision Screening on Wednesday. Bully Prevention class with Mrs. Hepsen on Wednesday.
Thursday specials are on Wednesday and Wednesday specials are on Thursday.
Friday at 1:00 is the Whole School Rosary then Courtyard Prayer.
We will be learning during all these changes.

Thursday

There will be a spelling test on Tuesday. We will be working on the theme assessment next week.
We have begun subtraction in math.
We talked about St. Francis of Assisi in religion. In language students presented Mr. Colao and Mr. Putz with their persuasive letters about the new playground equipment and what they wanted to include in it and why. The principals really enjoyed the letters. Students let their imaginations run wild.
There was Courtyard Prayer today.

Tuesday

Today was the Feast of our Guardian Angels. We also went to Adoration where student were excellent. They quietly read their Bibles and properly genuflected both going in and coming out of Adoration.
In language we discussed making predictions and confirming predictions along with reviewing vocabulary for the new story, "My Name is Yoon". We also worked on the long O sound. Students are completing their persuasive letters about new playground equipment. they are also working on final copies on their personal narratives about themselves.
In math we completed a math sprint.

Monday

Today I did send home spelling words a day early since there is no school this Friday or next Monday.
There will be a spelling test a week from Tuesday, October 9th. This is also Picture Day. Students are to wear their uniforms.
Today in religion we talked about Baptism. We discussed the symbols of Baptism and that this sacrament takes away Original Sin and Welcomes us into God's Family the Church.
In language students wrote rough drafts about their persuasive letters asking for new playground equipment and they also are writing a personal narrative about themselves.
In math students are adding 3 digit numbers without renaming. They are doing an excellent job lining up the numbers in vertical equations.
We are finishing up the Communities unit in social studies.
