Thursday

Today we talked about the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven.
We also cleaned out most of our desks. Please have your child bring their backpack one more time tomorrow.
Thanks to all the parents for planning such a terrific end of the year party. The students had a great time. They were partying all the way to their cars. :)
Tomorrow is a noon dismissal.

Tuesday

Congratulations to the 2nd graders for doing such an amazing acting in The Little Red Hen and The Brementown Musicians. Those who had to be substitutes did such a good job doubling up on parts.
We also had a great time meeting our pen pals from the 2nd grade at St. Gregory's. It was such fun, I think we will pen pal with them next year.

Please send in backpacks, I will be sending home items in their desks a little at a time so it won't be so heavy at the end.

Yes, the 2nd grade plays begin promptly at 8:30 with 2A going first, then 2B, then 2C. If students want to contribute to their costumes they can. Please don't purchase anything. Their costumes are very simple and are very cute the way they are.
Yes, our pen pals are coming for a short meet and greet tomorrow from about 10:00-11:00.
Yes, students have all of their specials this week.
 I will begin to send home items from their desks that they don't need anymore. They still need their backpacks all week. No homework this week.
The class end of the year party is on Thursday afternoon from about 1:00-2:15.
Yes, last day dismissal is at 12:00.

Friday

This is the last full Friday of the year. Students have done a great job memorizing their lines for the plays on Tuesday. They also took an end of the year math assessment. They all have shown so much growth. It sure looks like they have learned a lot. Next week is very busy. Tuesday at 8:30 the 2nd grade classes will perform their plays in the gym. Please be prompt we will start on time. Our pen pals from St. Gregory's will be coming later in the morning about 10:00-11:00 for a meet and greet. They will be able to exchange phone numbers and email addresses if they choose to. Thursday afternoon starting at 1:00, we will be having the end of the year party. If sending in treats, please Remember they cannot be homemade. We still need to follow health dept. rules. Friday is a noon dismissal. There is no assembly this year. Report cards will be mailed home on May 30. Have a great weekend.

Monday

In religion we read about a section about Jesus' death.
Tomorrow we will read about the Resurrection.
In math we are working with tangrams and making new designs with those shapes.
We are very busy practicing our plays. Today we began practicing without scripts.
Students also colored their animal poster costumes.
Remember to send in water, it's getting hot outside.
Friday is buck a jeans.

Friday

Today we reviewed what happened at the Last Supper in religion.
In language arts we worked on characters and settings and that the setting can change throughout the story. Students also learned that a main character don't necessarily remain throughout a whole story.
They also read a real life article on Tanzania in Southeast Africa.
Students took a quiz on geometric shapes and had their weekly time test.
They are starting to know their parts for the plays.
Friday, May 18 will be a buck a jeans day.

Thursday

Remember to send in water bottles because tomorrow afternoon is PE and it will be held outside due to a conflict in the gym.
Students did a wonderful job singing at the Art and Music Night. Those who were not able to attend will be given a small assignment to complete from Mrs. McLaughlin.
Students began a new unit on shapes in math. They learned about 3 dimensional shapes.
In religion we are finishing up lesson on the Holy Eucharist.
We have finished our last social studies unit on government.
We also are finishing up our grammar book this week.
Be sure your child is learning their lines for the play. Next week we will be rehearsing without scripts and we will be creating our costumes, too.
Play day is Tuesday, May 22 at 8:30. Each play lasts about 5-8 minutes.
Also, our pen pals from St. Gregory's School will come for a visit on the same day from about 10:00-11:00.
We are going to be so busy the last week of school. Also, the end of the year party will be on Thursday, May 24 from about 1:00-2:00.

Tuesday

Students do have their Assignment Sheets in their yellow folders. Students should practice memorizing their lines for their play. have them bring the scripts back to school daily as we will be practicing in class, too.
Students were a little cranky today. I think many stayed up a little too late watching the fabulous Coyotes beat Nashville. Hopefully tomorrow they will be more rested.
For science today we watched a webinar on water conservation. It was very informative. If your child would like to visit the website called Explore the Blue by Discovery Education: http://exploretheblue.discoveryeducation.com/ . On the website there are some fun family activities that your family may enjoy doing together.
In religion we talked about the Transubstantiation, at the exact moment when the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus.
In language we completed the Weekly Assessment and took the CLOSE test.
In math we finished up the unit on graphs.

I couldn't find the Assignment Sheet until after school, so they will be going home tomorrow.

However, your child should have brought home a play with their parts highlighted. this is the 2nd grades end of the year plays. Each class will be doing the same plays, The Little Red Hen and The Brementown Muscians. Your child will have one part in one play. We have scheduled the play for Tuesday, May 22 at 8:30. As the date gets closer I will confirm with the Office. Please help your child memorize their lines. The Narrators do not need to memorize their lines, but they do need to practice speaking clearly.

The School Art Walk and Music Concert is this Wednesday, from 5:30-8:30. The music part is from 6:30-7:30, students are to come to the classroom at 6:00 and they will be returned to the classroom for pickup.

Thursday

We had a great day! We started a new unit in math on tallying, and graphing. Students made their own graphs.
In reading we are reading a story called, "African American Inventors". The last Book Talks were all very fun games.
In social studies we are learning about how our government works from the city, to the state, to the national level.
Thank you to Mrs. Neal, Mrs Kelley, and Mrs. Eggimann for the delicious lunches, yesterday and today.
Thank you to everyone for the beautiful picture with all the students' signatures on it.

Don't forget tomorrow is a 12:00 dismissal. Please remember to send in water bottles. Students are beginning to complain about headaches and stomach aches.

Tuesday


I am pleased to announce that Emma Valentine has won 1st place for the 2nd grade category in the PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest. This is a statewide writers contest. Her story will be entered in the National PBS Kids GO! Writers Contest. In addition, her story will be posted for viewing at azpbs.org/writingwinners after May 31. Congratulations, Emma!

 Today we continued talking about Jesus as the Good Shepherd in religion.
In language arts we listened to some book talks. These are the best book talks yet! Great Job!
Tomorrow we will take the weekly assessment and the CLOSE test along with the dictation assessment.


Thank you all for the beautiful cookbook and to Mrs. Aister for the delicious lunch. I can't wait to try all those yummy recipes.
