Thursday

Students are doing a great job bringing in their popcorn papers for the contest.
In language, students listened to a cute play called, "Pushing up the Sky". We discussed what the problem was in the story and how the chiefs solved it. They also read an interview with the author and most were able to interview someone in the class that they don't know so well. They certainly enjoyed it. Most are finished writing their rough draft about their president.

The directions for creating a 3-D model of a president were sent home today. On the back are the grading expectations for the completed project. The report is finished in class and the model is completed at home.It is due on Wed., March 18th.

In math, students counted money in their workbooks. In religion, we talked about how Jesus is the Good Shepherd.  In science, students were given a lesson on the heart, as they just completed Jump Rope for the Heart campaign during PE this week. They learned about how to keep your heart healthy and that God gave us a heart to take care of.

Thursday

Today students went to the Library and had Spanish.
In language, students listened to "Dig, Wait. Listen" and the author's purpose was discussed as well as vocabulary. They also practiced making inferences on another short poem. In addition, they began their president research on the netbooks. They also wrote their final drafts to their new pen pals.

In math, we reviewed estimating and students took their time test.
In religion, we reviewed vocabulary and reviewed what penance is.
Don't forget Stations of the Cross is at 11:30 tomorrow.

Wednesday

Today we received ashes during Ash Wednesday Mass. It was a full house and the students behaved very well for such a long Mass.
Students worked on estimating in math today.
In science, we finished up our weather unit and in social studies we finished up the unit on geography. Tomorrow we will begin researching presidents.

Thursday

Today students visited the library. Be sure to return any overdue books.
They also had Spanish.
In language, students worked on making inferences, vocabulary, and worked with /aw/ and /au/ words. They also wrote their rough draft letter to their pen pals.
In math, students worked in subtraction using mental math strategies.
In religion, we discussed making up for our offenses. We talked about doing something extra or kind to make up for hurting God or others. We also reviewed the 5 steps to a good Confession.

Tomorrow is buck-a jeans day and red accessory day. It is also a Pride Day and our Valentine's Day party.

Remember Monday is a holiday. :)

Wednesday

Today students went to Mass. They were also able to watch a short video on Our Lady of Lourdes. Today was her feast day. We also began reading the story of St. Valentine.

In language, students practiced writing words with the /au/ and /aw/ sound. Our new reading story is called, "Nutik the Wolf Pup". The vocabulary was introduced and we began practicing making inferences after reading "My Home in Alaska". It was about a girl who received a letter from her pen pal. Not so coincidentally, we just received letters from our pen pals and we will begin writing to them tomorrow.

In math, we began subtraction using mental math.
Friday is a buck-a-jeans and Pride Day, along with our Valentine's Day Party.

Monday

Today was a busy day. In math, we reviewed subtracting using mental math. In language, students are finishing up their Flat Stanley writing. They also began writing a news article. The choices to write about were field day, the Flat Stanley field trip, or Catholic Schools Week. They are writing 2 paragraphs. They were also given their letter from their new pen pals. They were given pictures of their pen pals and most brought them home. We are saving the letters until they write back.

In social studies, students listened to a story about George Washington and did some follow up activities. They also picked a president to research and write about. They will be researching a president using the online World Book Encyclopedia.

Tuesday

In math, we finally finished the Mid-year assessment. We will begin mental math tomorrow. Tonight's math homework is a review of multiplication. We will continue regrouping in addition and subtraction, but multiplication and division will be included in story problems.

In language, we worked on details in a story and using sidebars in articles to look for information. In grammar, we worked on irregular verbs and writing an opening and closing in a letter. We did receive pen pal letters today and I will be handing them out in the next few days. Our pen pals are from St. Louis the King.

In religion, we talked about the feast of St. Blaise.
In science, students are making clouds and in social studies we are working on a groundhog.

Pen pals

We heard from our pen pals.

Monday

Today we went and saw "The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley". It was fabulous. The students really enjoyed watching. They were engaged the whole time.
We arrived back at lunch time. It was an Atrium day so those that stayed with me worked on social studies and the water cycle.

Don't forget Friday is Field Day. The weather should be beautiful.
