Tuesday

We were so busy today. Students learned a new math trick when adding 99 or 98 in a number sentence. Ask them about it. we also completed the next chapter in math.
Students were read a book about Holy Week and they were able to tell about Holy Week using Resurrection Eggs to demonstrate their knowledge about Holy Week. They also took a quiz about the Last Supper. In addition they were able to create Happy Easter eggs with black glue and tomorrow they will paint them and bring them home.
In language students had their weekly spelling test, dictation test, CLOSE test, and the Weekly Assessment.
They are all set for Spring Break. There will be NO spelling test on April 9th.

Monday

Today we read about the Last Supper and the Consecration during religion.
Students worked on possessives, quotation marks, and they reviewed synonyms and antonyms, along with working on summarizing a story by telling the author's purpose.
In math we are working on adding to the hundreds using mental math. It's so fun to watch them be able to add in their brains and get the right answer.
Students were able to check out books from the library.

Wednesday is a 12:00 dismissal and students are to wear their uniforms.

Thursday

Report cards should be online as of today.
In religion we discussed Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday, including Easter Sunday.
In language arts students completed the theme assessment for Unit 4. They also finished a final copy of their letters to President Obama. I hope to mail them before spring break, so maybe we will hear back by the end of the year. We are also reading a story about the Sonoran Desert. How fun to read about a place that you know about from personal experience.
In math we are reviewing how to do mental math without pencil and paper.
In social studies we finished up the unit on Geography. In science we will begin the Solids, Liquids and Gases unit.

Remember Stations of the Cross at 1:00 tomorrow in the courtyard.
Permission slips for the retreat are due tomorrow.

Monday

This was a very busy Monday. We reviewed the Miracles of Jesus. Students were very knowledgeable.
In reading we read a story about wolves and compared it to the story,"Nutik the Wolf Pup". Students went to the library today. We worked on spelling using words families.
In math we started the 2nd math textbook. Students are working on solving addition and subtraction problems in their heads. We are also reviewing problem solving strategies if they can't solve a problem in their heads.
In social studies we discussed natural resources.

The Change War is over on Wednesday. Report cards go online this Thursday. There will be Stations of the Cross this Friday.

Thursday

Today we finished our first math book. How exciting! That will be coming home tomorrow.
We will begin our new book tomorrow.
Students also finished up Unit 6 in math  and took the cum test today.

In reading students listened to the story, "Nutik the Wolf Pup". They also worked on using information they know and using what they read to make inferences about the story. Then they practiced by reading another story and answering inferential questions. Students also worked on making new words using hard and soft c, ch and tch, and the "z" sound.
Students also practiced using the story vocabulary.
We had a fun fire drill and then they were off to PE this afternoon.

It is getting hot and the students are starting to get cranky because they are dehydrated. Please send in water for your child.
Tomorrow is buck a jeans, PRIDE DAY, Green accessories day, along with the Change War.
It is also the end of the 3rd quarter.

Wednesday

We are so excited to have a new pope, Pope Francis I. We were able to watch the white smoke. Then students were so excited when they saw lights go on inside the Vatican. They also listened intently as Pope Francis spoke. We prayed at the beginning of the day for the Cardinals in the conclave. What a great day for our Church! After Pope Francis we also prayed for him.

In reading we reviewed our new vocabulary and discussed the suffix at the end of the words.
Students shared poems in pairs. Poems for the Poetry Contest are due on Friday.
We also reviewed context clues and practiced making inferences.
In math students worked on the review pages at the end of the first math book. They will be receiving the next math book tomorrow. It was fun to see them review concepts taught earlier and say how easy they are.
The class has really learned a lot and completing the review showed that.

In social studies we discussed how weather affects people's lives depending on where they live. They also practiced reading a bar graph, which they are all excellent at.

Don't forget to bring in your change.
We are still looking for a volunteer to be our Retreat Coordinator for the 2nd grade retreat on April 9.

Tuesday

We have adopted a cardinal who is one of the cardinals in the conclave at the Vatican looking for a new pope. We will pray for him each day until a new pope is found and then for 3 days after that. We are praying that the Holy Spirit guides him and the others as they search for a new pope. 
His name is Angelo Bagnasco, from Italy, born 1943-1-14. He's been a Cardinal since 2007-11-24 and his function is: Archbishop of Genoa, Italy.

We also talked about prayer and the different kinds of prayer today in religion. We also talked about how the cardinals in the Vatican are voting to find a new pope. Students learned that there needs to be a two-thirds vote to elect a pope.

In language arts we completed the weekly assessment, spelling test, close test, and dictation. We also worked on our persuasive letters to President Obama about how he can help save the Earth. The students are writing a two paragraph letter to him. They are on a second edit.
In math we reviewed division with 2 and 3. Students also completed story problems to practice problem solving.
In social studies students learned about land forms. They also made pictures and labeled all the different kinds of land forms.

Remember there is a Change War going on this week. So students can bring in their change all week.
Friday is Pride Day, Green Accessories Day, and the end of the 3rd Quarter.

Thursday

I am thinking our students may have some spring fever with all of this beautiful weather. Please remind your child they to start back drinking lots of water so they don't get cranky and have stomachaches.
In religion students watched a movie about the Good Samaritan and then we had a short discussion.
In reading students worked on compound words, capitals at the beginning of a book title and other important words in a title along with underlining the title.
Students did go to music today.
In spelling students worked solving riddles with words that have the "ar"sound. They also practiced adding s and es to words.

Tuesday

Yes, I did send home spelling homework instead of math.
In religion we discussed the meaning of the Our Father. It was broken down phrases so students could better understand the words.
In reading we completed the Weekly  Assessment, spelling test and dictation along with a CLOSE test. It's amazing to see the improvement in spelling so far this year. Students also started a new story about dangerous weather. We are working on the /oo/ sound spelled 5 ways. In addition we are reviewing contractions.
In math we worked on division by 3's.
We began a new social studies unit on geography.

Tomorrow I will be sending home the entry forms for the poetry contest. It is completely optional. I will also send home the entry form for the PBS Go Writers Writing Contest. This is also optional.

It is getting warmer so please send in water bottles.

Monday

This morning we began a new chapter about prayer and how Jesus taught His disciples how to pray.
In language are reviewed helping verbs and letter writing. In addition we reviewed hard and soft C, along with smaller words in compound words.
In math we began dividing by 3's. We also started playing "Around the World" for students to begin learning multiplication facts. We started with 0's, 1's, 2's and 3's today.
Reminder that there is no school this Friday and Monday, March 8-11.

Friday

Today was a beautifully warm and sunny day. Students loved playing outside. Since it is getting warmer, please remember to send in a water bottle. This keeps the stomach aches and headaches away when they stay hydrated.
In religion we quizzed on the Corporal Works of Mercy. In language students worked on using context clues to answer question. They also worked on dividing words into syllables.
Students worked in IXL for math today. They also explored the Treasure's website and did activities that related to our story this week.
