In math students are learning about 3 times tables.
In social studies we read about how communities change but that families and friends don't.

Thursday

For those helping in the library, the library will be closed for 2B on Nov. 21 and Nov. 28 due to the Book Fair.
Student are really catching on to multiplying by 2's in math.
We began a new story in reading called "The Alvin Ailey Kids". They worked on main ideas and summaries, along with phonics and vocabulary. They were able to find the words in their glossary.
We did attend adoration this afternoon. All were very quiet.

Tomorrow is buck a jeans and Book Talks are due.

Tuesday

Today we began with our Psalm book illustrating Psalm 8.
In math students took the Cumulative test for Units 1-5. Tomorrow begins with the 2's in multiplication.
In reading students learned about choosing topics for a report that don't have too much information. This was an inductory concept and was rather difficult. For example, choosing "mammals" as a report topic would have way too much information for a short report, but choosing "blue whales" would be perfect because there would be just the right amount of information.
In science students used big syringes that had plungers with an attached tube so they could push air in and out of the syringe. No worries... only tubes were attached to the syringes.;) Students attached two syringes with one tube and then they experimented to see what happens when they pulled on one plunger. they found out that the other plunger was pulled in the opposite direction.
In social studies we worked in "Our Community" book, unit 1, "Living in a Community".

Tuesday

2B will be in charge of the Morning Courtyard Prayer on Monday, which begins promptly at 7:45.
The 2nd grade has another week in the spring for Mass and Courtyard Prayer days.

We have been so busy. We did a science experiment using air and water. Students experimented with water displacement and that air does take up space in water.
In social studies we began the new unit on communities.
We completed the time test in math. We have also begun division. Students divided sticks into different equal groups.
In language we completed the Weekly Assessment, the CLOSE test, and the dictation test. Remind students that capitals and periods count this quarter as well as neatness.

National Emergency Alert Practice

On Wednesday, November 9th, at 12:00 p.m., the State of Arizona will be testing the Emergency Alert System. The test plays a vital role in ensuring Arizona is prepared for all hazards and is able to receive critical information should the need arise. The Palo Verde nuclear reactor is among the sirens that might sound off and that there is some concern that people who do not know about the test may panic. The sirens in all of those government buildings in the downtown areas all over the state might also sound off. There will be broadcasts locally on radio and television stations.

Thursday

I will try to post pictures of our day when there is time. The ones for today are from a phonics lesson.

Tomorrow is Race for Education. Students can wear their PRIDE spirit t-shirts or unifrom shirts and shorts of sweats depending on the weather and their school tennis shoes. NO other shirts are allowed or sophies shorts.

Reminder: if you haven't sent in your extra $5.00  for the bus for Pioneer Village, please do so.

Also: for Grandparents/Great Friends day we are asking for students to bring in a picture of a grandparent or great friend. We would like each student to have a picture on our class Family Tree, even if they won't have a grandparent or great friend her for Grandparents Day. I am putting up the tree today so students should bring a picture sooner than later, for sure by Nov. 23.

Tuesday

Hope you all enjoyed the long weekend.
Today is the Feast of All Saints. We celebrated by going to Mass. The Mass was exceptionally long, with the Litany of the Saints, and the 2nd Reading. The students were great and sang beautifully. There is no school mass tomorrow.
2B will be leading Courtyard Prayer on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:45.  2nd grade also has a Mass week in the spring so more students can participate.
In math we started multiplication by putting objects in equal groups.
In language we finished up our story from early last week. Since we concentrated so much on math last week, I did not give the reading Weekly Assessment or the other assessments in language because I didn't think it was fair. Students still completed reading packets and are held accountable that way.
Book Talk information went home today. They will be due Nov. 18th.
Friday is a 12:00 dismissal. From 9:00-10:00 the 2nd grade will be running around the field.
