Today students created poster for the 2nd grade school supplies drive. They worked in small groups and created beautiful posters.
They also pledged to prevent bullying at Bl. Pope John XXIII and signed our Pledge Poster that we will take to the kickoff on Monday.
In math we reviewed units 1-7 and tomorrow they will complete a Cum Review test. It's amazing to see how they are progressing with mental math and problem solving in their heads. It's quite amazing. Keep practicing those basic math facts. It does work better when they are applying them to equations. Students are also improving in their abilities to solve story problems.
In social studies we talked about how it's cold in some places like Pennsylvania and warm like Florida. We also compared Florida and Phoenix. We reviewed all the different landforms and looked at a landform map.
In language we are also reading a story called, "Superstorms" in reading. We are also reviewing contractions, along with making predicitions and confriming predictions in a story.

Tuesday

Today we read the parable called "The Buried Treasure". Then we reflected in our workbooks about how the parables talked about the Kingdom of Heaven.
In language we completed the Weekly Assessment, CLOSE test, and dictation. I think students still have vacationitis. They seem to be having issues concentrating and following directions. I noticed this on these assessments.
If your child receives an Incident Report and it says "warning 1", this is like a yellow light. Your child has probably needed a lot of redirection or has been told the same directions many times and he/she still seem to be off task. Please don't worry, this does not reflect any permanent consequence.  This seems to work when recess and time outs are not working. This is my communication to you only.
In math we reviewed subtracting/adding 99 or 98 from another 2 or 3 digit number. They seemed to get a better idea about adding one or two to 98 or 99 to get 100 and then add 1 or 2 to the other number, for example 47+99= 47-1+ 100= 146  or 158- 98= 158-2 -100=60. It is new to all of us, even me.
Tomorrow I think we will be moving desks, I think this will help students regroup and refocus for the quarter.

Monday, January 23, 2012

Monday

Today we read a parable called "The Mustard Seed" and another one that was similar called "The Sunflower Seed". We also talked about the disciples who spread God's Good News like the way mustard seeds spread.
In math students had a subtraction activity where they subtracted 2 2digit numbers mentally and plotted the answer on a 100 chart. Tomorrow they will finish the workbook pages for practice.

In reading students were read a story about Chinese New Year. They also worked on dividng words into syllables. They caught up on some work from last week that they didn't finish. Students also practiced creating a flow chart on how to care for a living thing.
Dibels assessments are done.

On Friday the 2nd grade will announce the School Supplies Drive at Courtyard Prayer. There will be 2-3 students from each class who will have a part. Remember the drive starts next week.

Thursday

YES, tomorrow is a Buck-a-jeans day.

In reading we are working on a story about recycling. We were lucky enough to have 2-  8th grade girls
come in and talk about recycling at school. We also worked on word patterns like: __ink, ___ump, and __ight. We also looked at flow charts and how they work.

In computers students went on www.weatherkids.com and learned all about different kinds of weather. It is a very interactive sight.
Students also learned more about landforms in social studies.

In the afternoon students went to adoration.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Tuesday

Welcome back! We started the day learning about the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Students worked on a "I have a dream" mobile. Students wrote down dreams for our community, country, and the world. They are hanging up in the classroom. In math students took a math quiz. Dibels assessments have begun during reading time and should be done by early next week. Assignment sheets went home with the January Scholastic book orders. Please remember to return report card envelopes.

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Thursday

Today students went to Adoration in the afternoon and were given a religion quiz on the Holy Family.
In math students are doing an awesome job with mental math. Most students aren't using their fingers anymore to add or subtract. They participated in a math activity adding 97, 98 or 99 to another number then they had to use mental math to add them together.
In language students took a Sitton spelling assessment and everyone improved. Good Job!
Dibels assessments will begin next week.
Have a great long weekend!

Wednesday

Today we talked about Martin Luther King, Jr. and read the story "Martin's Big Words". We will complete some activites today and tomorrow.
We also had a class meeting and discussed the "no trading" rule for anything brought. We had an instance yesterday where a couple of students forgot, a gentle reminder was in order. In addition, I said, "Remember your boundaries". That was all I had to say they knew from the last discussion what I was talking about. I did not mention or go into specific boundaries.
In math we talked about adding 2 to 98 or 1 to 99 to make 100 and take 1 or 2 away from the other number and then add them together. For example 23+98, becomes 21+100. They caught onto this easily.

Monday, January 9, 2012

Monday

Today we worked on the Holy Family with Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We are also finishing up pen pal letters. Hopefully we will send them either tomorrow or Wednesday.

In math we are reviewing adding 2 2-digit numbers.

On Thursday report cards will be sent home. In addition, individual and Diocesan Iowa test scores will be in the envelope with an explanation of the results.

Remember this Friday and Monday are holidays.

Thursday

We had such a great day!
First we learned about snowflakes and made snowflakes. The students sure used a lot of fine motor skills and creativity.
Then we practiced working with r controlled vowels.
Students spent the rest of the morning taking their STAR reading tests and typing their persuasive arguments about why you should come to Bl. Pope John XXIII Catholic School.
The STAR reading test is where we get the AR reading levels. Tomorrow I will send home a sheet with reading levels for January. Most went up in the levels, some stayed the same. Both are good as long as they are reading.
In math students worked on strategies using a hundreds chart on how to add to 100 and subtract from 100. We practiced on the interactive hundreds chart on the Smartboard and then they practiced on their hundreds chart, finally they practiced in their workbooks.
We ended the day by going to Adoration where students did an awesome job staying silent and they either read their Bibles or prayed their rosaries.

Happy New Year!

In religion we are learning about the Holy Family and the Epiphany.
We will begin writing to our pen pals at St. Gregory's this week.

In math students we so excited to begin working in the new math text and workbook. Today we began with a review of fact families and number bonds. Students are writing their own story problems. They were also kind enough to help me sort out a box of cards that spilled and got all mixed up. They put the cards back in their suits and created full decks of cards. Now we can use them.

January is a month of assessments: students will be given a mid year Dibels assessment and a STAR reading test for the Accelerated Reading program.
