Thursday

Today was an exciting day in 2B. We had a hummingbird visit our room. It fly in through an open door. it was disoriented and couldn't find its way out. Luckily, Mr. Coleo and Mr. Putz came and got the bird out while we were at lunch recess.
We are finishing up 2nd quarter so we are ready for Christmas vacation. Students finished Christmas Around the World with writing about their own family traditions. They also made a star ornament.
Please have your child bring their backpacks as students will be cleaning out their desks and they will be bringing home whatever papers are left in their desks. We will start a new quarter in January.

Wednesday

We had a great day after a stormy night. Students made angel ornaments. We finished up our unit in social studies. Christmas Around the World is winding down. Students did Sweden today and learned about St. Lucia. They also started a measuring project to create a house using rulers, graph paper, and white paper for their creation.
Friday is accessory day, but uniforms still need to be worn. Our Christmas party is on Friday morning.

Monday

Today students worked in their Nativity booklets. They also took the quiz on the Holy Family chapter in religion.
Students visited France today as part of Christmas Around the World. Tomorrow they will be visiting Russia. They also worked on the netbooks creating a new document and inserting a picture.

In math we reviewed the unit on measuring and took the quizzes that assess the chapters. Tomorrow they will finish up this section.
In social studies we are finishing up our US timeline. We worked on the Civil War and tomorrow we will work on pioneers and a community's history.

There will be a spelling test tomorrow. There is no homework grid this week. So there will not be a spelling test the Tuesday we come back from break.
Friday is the end of the 2nd quarter. It is a 11:50 dismissal for primary grades. It is also accessory day and holiday party time. That sure will be a busy half day.

Green and Red Accessory Day Friday


o help celebrate Christmas, this Friday is Christmas Accessory Day!!  Can you please spread the word to your students and parents?

Students can wear red or green accessories or accessories with Christmas related items on them.  Please see more guidelines for the day below. 
Please note this is NOT a jeans day and therefore students must still wear regular school uniform (polos and skirts/khakis) with white shoes.

The following items can be worn on accessory day with the designated color and/or design:
-          socks
-          hats (can only be worn in the courtyard or field…cannot be worn in the classroom)
-          necklaces
-          bracelets
-          undershirts (long sleeves)
-          earrings (not dangling)
-          hair accessories (headbands, clips or bows - no dye)
-          shoelaces
-          ties
-          scarves
-          belts
-          suspenders


The following items cannot be worn on accessory days:
-          no profanity or obscenities
-          nail polish
-          body paint
-          face paint
-          makeup
-          colored shoes

Wednesday

Students were exceptional during mass today. It was the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I did read them a book about her by Tomie de Paola.
In language we started our unit on Christmas Around the World. Our class visited Mexico. They learned that Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico. They also learned that the tradition of Las Posadas is celebrated in Mexico and is nine days long ending on Christmas with a celebration.
In math students worked with yards and feet. Tomorrow will be inches.
In social studies students finished watching a movie about Harriet Tubman.

Tuesday

Today we learned about the Holy Family and we concentrated on Joseph today.
In reading students are working on their winter stories. They are also working on long e and they are reviewing capital letters.
In math we are continuing to measure in centimeters. Tomorrow we will learn how to measure in yards and feet. Students are doing an excellent on subtraction math facts tests. They all passed with above 97% yesterday. Great Job!
We went to Adoration in the afternoon.
In social studies we are learning about the Civil War and slavery. We discussed Harriet Tubman and watched part of a movie on her life.

Friday is PRIDE Day and buck a jeans day.

Monday

This morning we lit 2 candles for the 2nd week of Advent.
In language students worked on their winter stories. They also read about telling tales and we reviewed what a drop down menu is on the internet.
We also reviewed different ways to spell long vowel words.
Students did go to the library today.
In math students worked in small group measuring things in centimeters. We also reviewed the difference between meters and centimeters.
In social studies we talked about the Revolutionary War along with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Don't forget the Christmas Concert is this Friday at 6:30. Students should come to the classroom and wait their turn to perform.

Thursday

Today was very exciting! St. Nicholas came and visited our room twice. I also read them the story of St. Nicholas.
We were honored to have some Notre Dame students come and share stories they had written and illustrated. The stories had a moral at the end and we discussed where they got their ideas and how long it took to write and illustrate. Our class really enjoyed listening to these stories.
In reading students worked on making short vowel words into long vowel words and homophones. Students worked in centers as I worked with small reading groups.
There was a longer Music class today.
We worked on a mental math sprint. We ended the day with a short quiz on nonstandard units of measurement.

Tuesday

The 2nd grade team has added 2 more words to the weekly spelling list. You will also notice that the words are more difficult. The Bonus Word at the bottom of the agendas will still be there. The total for spelling words is 12, plus the bonus word.

Today in religion we worked on Advent and took a short quiz.
In language arts we started a new story that is a tale from Liberia. It is hysterical. It's called, "Head, Body, Legs". We are also working on suffixes, -ful and -less. In phonics we are working on long e. In reading we will be working on context clues and cause and effect.
In math students enjoyed measuring using nonstandard units, ie small paper clips, ribbon, and a pattern of their foot. They measured the door, chalk tray, pencil box, name tag, desk, and a dictionary.

In religion we discussed the Three Wise Men and Advent.
In math we finished up the assessment for Unit 2.
We will begin measurement tomorrow.
In social studies we worked on our timelines and added the Pilgrims.
In language arts we finished up the theme assessment.
Tomorrow we will begin a very fun story called, "Head, Body, Legs".
